How To Be Wise – Financial Management (IFM #102)

This course is ideal for new board members, staff members who may not work in the finance department, or even volunteers who want to gain knowledge about financial workings of fairs. Attendees review what is a financial statement; what is and how to develop a chart of accounts; utilizing the profit and loss statements for planning purposes. In addition, Budgets – defining, creating, understanding and making them work for you!

How To Be Wise – Financial Management is a for-credit course of the Institute of Fair Management (required for all IFM enrollees but open to all IAFE members) but the topics covered will be beneficial to anyone working in the industry.

Herbert F. Higgs, Jr., CFE, is retired as the General Manager Panhandle-South Plains Fair, Lubbock, TX. Herb has a B.A. degree in Secondary Education University of Arizona (1971) Tucson.

His professional experience spans Forty years’ experience in the fair industry. Nineteen years at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield, five years as Manager of the Ionia Free Fair in Ionia, MI, and 16 years as General Manager Panhandle South Plains Fair. Herb retired in 2017.

Herb is a past Zone 6 director of the International Association of Fairs and Exhibitions (IAFE), a past member of the IAFE Convention, Nominating, Awards and Budget and Finance committees, He is a past Chair of the Professional Improvement, Certification, Concessions and Commercial Exhibits, Physical Plant and Operations committees. He has served as a board member of the Institute of Fair Management Advisory Board. He was awarded Certified Fair Executive status in 1999. In addition, he has served as Second Vice President-Treasurer of the Texas Association of Fairs & Events (TAF&E). In addition, Herb has addressed several State and Provincial Associations as a member of the IAFE Speaker’s Bureau.

Prior to entering the fair profession his career includes experience in the banking profession in both the operations and lending areas. Herb and his wife Patty reside in Springfield, IL
