Animal Welfare vs. Animal Rights – Are You Prepared? Presenter Linda, Chezem, JDT will review the legal perspectives: what to expect and how to handle activists. She will identify current trends in Animal Welfare and Animal Rights and identify the difference, the activists associated with each movement, and review the laws relevant (both human and animal).

Chezem was consecutively appointed to the Lawrence County Court, the Lawrence Circuit Court, and the Indiana Court of Appeals. She was the first woman appointed to a Circuit Court bench in Indiana and the second woman to serve on the Indiana Court of Appeals.

After 22 years, Chezem moved to a University-based career and holds the designation of a Professor Emerita of Youth Development and Agriculture Education, School of Agriculture, Purdue University. Currently Chezem holds an adjunct appointment at Indiana University’s School of Medicine and serves of Counsel at the law offices of Foley, Peden, and Wisco. From this base she works on federal, state and local policy on agriculture and related rural health issues. Chezem has been particularly interested in common law and the legal protection of property rights. She serves on the Indiana Farm Bureau property rights advisory committee.

Chezem owns and operates her family grain farm in Clay County, Indiana that has been in her Grandmother’s family since the 1800’s. She also has an ownership share in a beef operation in Daviess County. Her husband owns and operates his family grain farms in Clinton County and Carroll County. Their daughter operates their Scott County farm.
