Cal Expo Takes Over Harness Racing

The California Exposition & State Fair Board of Directors has terminated its lease with the now-defunct Sacramento Harness Association (SHA). The SHA was unable to meet requirements for an operating license.  The Cal Expo received a harness racing license from California Horse Racing Board and now runs its own day-to-day operations. This marks the first time that the Cal Expo has run a meet unrelated to the state fair.  Racing Secretary Fred Kuebler and track announcer Scott Ehrlich have retained their roles.

Cal Expo has cut back on the racing schedule from four nights a week to a three night a week slate -- Thursdays through Saturdays. According to Cal Expo Racing Director David Elliot, the schedule may expand back to four nights in the spring depending on the number of entries and wagering. The first harness race under Cal Expo’s operation was held on March 6.
