Development of an Animal Welfare Policy
Tuesday, June 5, 2012
6:00 pm Central
(7 pm Eastern, 5 pm Mountain, 4 pm Pacific)
Duration: 60 minutes
Cost: $59 per site
This session will provide fairs with a detailed look at an Animal Welfare Policy (AWP). Attendees will be encouraged to download the AWP template (available in the IAFE On-Line Library) prior to the seminar. They can then follow along as we first outline the policy, and then provide direction on how to personalize the policy section by section.
In 60 minutes, we will outline the reasons for establishing an animal welfare policy at your fair, and will go over the specific components any animal welfare policy should contain such as the fair's philosophy statement on animal welfare, code of conduct and ethics, commitment to education, positive animal information and much more.
Heidi Herriott is proud to be a third generation entertainer, animal trainer and animal welfare advocate. Her career has taken her throughout North and South America. As a child, she traveled and performed with her famous circus family with various circuses including Ringling Bros., and as an adult has continued on with the family tradition. She travels and performs with her horses at fairs, rodeos, parks, circuses, horse shows, and special events. Travelling and exhibiting her animals gives Heidi a unique perspective and skills in dealing with and understanding the significant issues that animal related industries face with respect to regulations, legislation, negative media, and the philosophical rhetoric being advanced by animal rights groups.
Heidi also ventured into the business aspect of the industry as the Circus Unit Manager for the Outdoor Amusement Business Association (OABA) and the Executive Director for the Florida Federation of Fairs. While in those roles, she served as the national Circus Industry spokesperson, and industry liaison to the USDA. Her on-air credits include the TODAY Show, Good Morning America, Fox, MSNBC, and the O'Reilly Factor. She speaks around the country on topics including Animal Welfare, Media Training, and Crisis Management. She facilitates media training sessions with a unique focus on dealing with animals in public displays.
Heidi serves on the Agriculture Committee of the IAFE. When not on tour speaking or performing with her animals, Heidi makes her home outside of Sarasota, Florida.
